Welcome to 3rd Grade! We are excited to have your child in our class for 2020-21 school year. We want to take a few moments to explain our class management, homework and expectations.
Classroom Rules / Discipline
Our classroom rules are as follows:
In our class we use the card system. Each student has six cards that are six different colors. Each color represents a different consequence. When a student misbehaves, he or she will be asked to pull a card. The colors represent following:
Green = Good
Yellow = Warning
Red = 5 minutes of valued time
Orange = 10 minutes of values time
Brown = 15 minutes of valued time
Black = Conference with Parent, Teacher, Student
When students pull a card they record in a record book the reasons for pulling a card.
Students will be rewarded with good behavior in Class Dojo in Chinese classroom and fish tickets in English classroom.
Parent Communicator Folder
School information, homework, and spelling words will be sent home in the parent communicator folder. This folder will come home each day and should be sent back to school the following day. Students will keep their folders in their backpack and take out when needed.
Spelling Words will come home every Thursday and the test will be the following Wednesday. Your child will be tested on words that correspond with our phonics program from Journeys. Spelling Tests are worth 100 points each.
Every week, on Thursday, a Reading calendar will be sent home. Please record the number of minutes your child reads each day, initial or sign the calendar, an return it on the following Wednesday. Each 3rd grade child needs to read at least 20 minutes a day 5 days a week. Reading can include reading of books, magazines, newspapers, menus, and subtitles. Reading minutes will be 10% of your child’s Reading grade.
Every week, also on Thursday, a Multiplication calendar will be sent home. Please record the number of minutes your child practices multiplication facts each day, initial or sign the calendar, and return it on the following Wednesday. Each month we will focus on a specific fact family for multiplication. Students can practice at home by using flashcards, verbal drill, or by going to multiplication.com. Each 3rd grade child needs to practice multiplication facts at least 10 minutes a day 5 days a week. Multiplication minutes will be 10% of your child’s Math grade. ***Mastery of all multiplication and division facts 0-12 is expected by the end of 3rd grade.
Students will get Chinese homework in Google Classroom on Thursdays and submit by Sundays. It will include Chinese and Math homework.
Chinese Class Dojo
Please join Chinese Class Dojo. You will see your child videos, photos, and points.
Chromebook Login and Google Classroom Formula
Each child will get a Chromebook this year. When we receive them from the supplier, students will take Chromebooks home on Thursdays and must return them on Mondays. Chromebooks will be fully charged at school and students will not take the charging cords home. Chromebooks can be charged by Android charging cords at home. Office Hours on Fridays
Fridays will be remote learning days. Students will have a half hour of ELA, a half hour of Chinese, and an hour of Math work to do. Mrs. Smith and Mrs. Lin’s office hours will be 9 A.M. to 10 A.M. If you have questions you can contact us by email during this time.
Due to COVID we will not be allowed to have classroom volunteers during school this year.
Birthday & Celebrations
Birthdays will be celebrated in both classrooms, however if you would like to send a treat on your child’s birthday, each treat should be packed individually, and the whole package should be sealed. Treats need to be prepackaged this way in the store for them to be allowed in school. Please let us know ahead of time if you plan to send treats. Unfortunately, homemade treats are against district policy so all treats will need to be purchased at the store.
